FAQ's

What animal fibers are included?

We are still developing a list of acceptable animal fibers using the guidelines provided by the United Nations International Year of Natural Fibres which include ‘those renewable fibres from plants and animals which can be easily transformed into a yarn for textiles.” The operative word is “renewable.” In some cases, the fiber is secondary to the animal’s primary purpose such as the New Zealand bushtail possum or the American bison. However, as long as the fiber is harvested in a responsible and sustainable manner it is acceptable even if it is not specifically listed on the site. Fibers that are spun into yarn with the hide still attached are not acceptable.

What plant fibers are included?

Plant fibers include seed hairs, such as cotton: stem (or bast) fibers such as flax and hemp; leaf fibres such as sisal, and husk fibres such as coconut. Additional plant fibers also include jute and ramie.

What if I would like to use a fiber not listed?

If you do not see the specific fiber listed that you would like to use and it falls under the aforementioned criteria then it can be entered in our “Triple Sundae” category which includes any combination of at least three natural fibers.

What types of prizes are being awarded?

The prizes for each category will be based on the level of sponsorship support.
